COLOR OF CHANGE APPLAUDS SUCCESS OF IRS DIRECT FILE, SAVING TIME AND MONEY FOR BLACK TAXPAYERS, CONDEMNS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S INTENTION TO END PROGRAM
NATIONAL – Yesterday, the Trump administration confirmed plans to end IRS Direct File, a tax filing service that allows users to submit their tax returns directly to the Internal Revenue Service for free.
In response, Portia Allen-Kyle, Interim Executive Director of Color Of Change, issued the following statement:
“When we fought alongside our coalition partners to expand IRS Direct File, we recognized that this program could save everyday working people money. IRS Direct File removed unnecessary filing fees and allowed people to file taxes free of charge. We’re proud that our efforts expanded IRS Direct File to 25 states and saved our members roughly $250,000 and over 13,000 hours during the 2025 filing season. The Trump administration’s decision to end this program isn’t about its efficiency or effectiveness; it’s simply another effort to trade favors with corporate lobbyists who lost money because the tax filing process became easier for Black and working-class people. It’s a reminder that without exploitation and barriers, government services can deliver for Black people. Color Of Change will continue to fight for government services that are effective and make our lives easier.”
