Washington, DC – In response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. Barbara, Nadine Smith, President and CEO of Color Of Change, issued the following statement:

“The 14th Amendment was written in the aftermath of a country that had legally defined Black people as property, as non-citizens, as people with no rights that the law was bound to respect. That history is not background. It is the reason this amendment exists. Birthright citizenship was a deliberate act of repair, a constitutional commitment that belonging in this country would not be determined by who your parents were or what status the government assigned them.

Today’s ruling holds that commitment. But we should be clear-eyed about what holding it means at this moment. These attacks have never been only about immigration. They are part of a coordinated effort to determine who counts, who gets represented, and who remains permanently outside the protections this democracy claims to offer. That effort does not stop at the courthouse steps. Organized people have beaten back this machine before, and we will do it again.”
